COMMITTED

FAMILY: My wife, Pat, and I have been happily married for thirty-years. We first met while working together at a summer camp in Savannah before I went to law school.  Our paths crossed again while I was in law school at Emory University and Pat was employed as a special education teacher in the Newton County school system.  After finishing law school and a fellowship year in Germany, we married. Pat continued to teach special needs children in the Newton County school system.  Pat and I made our home in Covington in 1995. We are the proud parents of a daughter, Amanda.  She is a graduate of the Newton County school system and the Oxford Singing Children and Oxford Youth Singers.  She is a graduate of Xavier University, UGA and a graduate student at Georgia State University.

COMMUNITY:  Since making our home in Newton County, I have been committed to making our community strong through my volunteer work.  As an Eagle Scout, I recognize the value of volunteer action in the community.  I have volunteered with the Arts Association-Newton County for nearly twenty-years; serving as a board member, board president, past president. Currently, I am an “emeritus director” of the Arts Association-Newton County and serve as the association’s volunteer attorney.  For more than twenty-years I have served on the Covington Downtown Development Authority helping to promote economic growth in the City of Covington’s downtown district. For nearly a decade I have served on the Advisory Board of the Covington Family YMCA. In 2014, I was selected as one of the Metro Atlanta YMCA volunteers of the year.

For nearly twenty-three-years I have been a member of the Kiwanis Club of Covington having served as president, vice-president, board member and committee chair. Currently I chair the club’s scholarship committee helping to select recipients of the club’s six annual college scholarships for students. The Kiwanis Club of Covington sponsors local Boy Scout Troop 222, and I have frequently served as a board of review member for Boy Scouts advancing in rank. I have also been a member of the advisory council, Yellow River District of the Atlanta Boy Scout Council.

At Ficquett Elementary School I served as president of the PTO and served as a member of the committee that drafted the uniform policy for that school.  Local public education for all students has always been important to me, and I have actively supported education in Newton County by serving on the  Newton Education Foundation as a founding board member and the second chairperson. Additionally, I served on the Advisory Committee for the Paralegal Studies Program at Georgia Piedmont Technical College.

Over the years I have also served in other capacities with various local not-for-profit organizations: Member of  Board of Directors with The Hospice; chair of governmental affairs committee for Newton County Chamber of Commerce;   ad hoc Attorney for the Newton County Service Center of Salvation Army; and ad hoc Attorney for the Newton County Juvenile Court Truancy Program. I am a graduate of Leadership Newton County, a member of the Newton County Chamber of Commerce and the Newton County Bar Association.

CHURCH: Since shortly after moving to Covington, my wife and I have been regular parishioners at St. Augustine’s Catholic Church.  I have served on the parish council and the finance committee, and taught Sunday school to grade school students. Currently, I am a lector (lay reader) at Sunday Mass.
